Lady Pats advance to title game
Lincoln posted big numbers to defeat Seton Catholic in the first game of the Healthy Hoopla Girls Basketball Tournament at Cambridge City last week. The Lady Golden Eagles opened the Healthy Hoopla Holiday Tournament with a big, 66-30, victory over Seton Catholic.
Senior Olivia Davis had a double- double, 16 points and 11 rebounds, in advancing the host school to the championship game.
In the second game, Coach Scott Gray was happy to revert back to his season-opening lineup, and that lineup defeated Southwestern, 45-33, to advance to the championship game with Lincoln.
“We are back to full strength and healthy or as healthy as we can be,” Gray said. “We are where I thought we would be at the beginning of the year.”
Junior Tara Williams and senior Kyla Miller returned to the lineup after struggling with injuries this season.
The Lady Patriots rolled to a 45-33 victory over the Southwestern Lady Spartans, after holding off a challenge in the second quarter.
A field goal from SW’s Madison Van Gorden at the end of the first quarter left UC with a three-point, 10-7, edge, but not for long.
The Lady Spartans charged back with 11 points in the second quarter to outscore UC, 11-7, and take a one point, 18-17, halftime lead.
After the halftime break, Union County came back with their first quarter tactics to go up, 33-24, after three quarters and on to a 12-point victory at the final buzzer.
UC freshman forward Madison Gray topped the score chart with 19 points and eight rebounds. Taylor Pinkerton joined Gray in double digits with 10 points and four rebounds.
Southwestern was led by freshman Lexi Wilkins’ 12 points and 10 points from Van Gorden.
Lincoln’s first game win and UC’s second game victory put the two TEC teams in the evening championship game.
The Lady Patriots return home to host Seton Catholic at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 3, and Tri County North at 12 noon on Saturday, Jan. 6, at Roy E. Stevens Gymnasium.
