Lady Yellow Jackets sting Union County, 37-36

It went down to the wire at Morristown last Saturday, but at the end, the Lady Yellow Jackets won 37-36.

“We are becoming the masters of losing the close games,” UC coach Scott Gray said. “The girls made a good effort, they battled to the end, but we missed a couple key plays and missed some free throws that led to points .”

With that said, the coach compared rosters and found Union County freshmen and sophomores were playing Morristown juniors and seniors.

“Fayth Hill played another great game today. She’s really stepping up,” Gray said. “She’s the smartest girl on our team because she knows where she’s supposed be and what she should be doing.”

Hill (five points) and Madison Gray (four points) carried UC to a 9-9 first quarter tie score. The junior, freshman duo finished with 12 points and five rebounds and 16 points and seven rebounds, respectively, to lead all scoring.

Kat Parker and Taylor Pinkerton traded baskets early in the second quarter prior to UC forging ahead, 14-11 on Rainey Shepler’s rebound and put back. But Morristown filled the final minute with a pair of three-pointers to go ahead, 22-16.

The Hill, Gray duo out-scored the Lady Jackets, 9-6 in the third quarter, to cut the lead to three (28-25).

As do most, the eventful final eight minutes required more than eight minutes to come up with a winner. There were five time outs, 10 fouls called, 8-of-20 free throws made, scramble after scramble for rebounds and loose balls and a player going to the bench with five fouls.

Madison Gray made the final UC basket after grabbing an offensive rebound, but it was too little, too late. Morristown slipped by UC, 37-36.

“We missed some shots today that might have given us a chance to win, but we’re not quite there yet,” Coach Gray said. “But we’ll get there.”
