Delayed fireworks show on SaturdayBy Bev Woodruff, Staff Writer
After waiting a month for rain, the College Corner Volunteer Fire Department Chief has given the nod to proceed with the Community 4th of July Fireworks show. The entire area is now in a severe drought. Last month, the Community 4th of July Fireworks show was delayed due to the drought. The area has received slightly more than a half inch of rain since the show was delayed. After waiting a month, and hoping for more rain, CCVFD Chief David McDill has agreed the fireworks can proceed on Saturday evening. “We’re going to make it work,” McDill said earlier this week. “We will have trucks and plenty of guys [fire fighters] there.” McDill said he will decide on Saturday if the fire department will wet down some areas where the show will be held. The drought actually began in February, when rainfall/snow in the area began to fall behind normal. The only month this year with above average rain/snowfall was January. Since that time, rain/snow fall has been less than average every month. Through the month of July the immediate area around College Corner received approximately seven and a half inches less than the normal amount of rain/snow fall. The Community Fireworks Show is slated to begin at 9:30 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 4, in the State Line Ball Park at the College Corner Grove. Rozzi’s Famous Fireworks is in charge of the show. The show is sponsored entirely by Butler Rural Electric and Whitewater Valley REMC. An evening of softball entertainment is planned prior to the beginning of the fireworks show. Beginning at 5 p.m. summer t-ball and softball awards will be presented. A softball game between parents of t-ball and softball participants will begin at 6:30. At 7:30 p.m., two church league softball games will be held. The concession stand will be open so plan to make it an evening of family entertainment. Come out for the awards presentation and softball games and watch the fireworks.
