CC Fire Dept. has busy weekend
By Bev Woodruff, Staff Writer
If the College Corner Volunteer Fire Department was not a “volunteer” unit, firefighters could say they earned their money last weekend. From Friday evening, Jan. 20 through Sunday afternoon, Jan. 22, the CCVFD responded to four vehicle accidents. Weather conditions were a contributing factor in all four accidents. On Friday evening, freezing rain fell, leaving a covering of approximately a quarter inch of ice in the area. Overnight, on Saturday, a heavy fog descended on the area. The heavy fog continued all day on Sunday and severely limited visibility. On Friday evening, at approximately 10 p.m. the department was dispatched to an accident on U.S. 27, approximately two miles northwest of College Corner. The driver of a vehicle lost control, the vehicle left the road and rolled onto its side. According to information from the CCVFD, the driver of the vehicle was not injured. Sunday morning, at 4:30 a.m., the department was dispatched to an accident on Contreras Pike between Brookville Pike and Harmony Road. On the way to that accident CCVFD vehicles encountered another accident near the railroad crossing on Contreras Road. There were no injuries at either scene. Sunday afternoon, a second dispatch sent the department to an accident near the intersection of Ohio 725, Indiana State Route 44 and the State Line Road. According to fire department information, one unit almost collided head on with an oncoming vehicle while traveling to the accident. The fire truck was traveling north on State Line Road with lights and sirens activated when two oncoming vehicles were observed. Although, the fog was heavy, the first vehicle appeared to see the fire truck and slowed. The second vehicle did not. The second vehicle started around the first vehicle, then saw the oncoming fire truck and veered into the ditch. CCVD notified the Camden, Ohio fire department to request mutual aid. Camden was asked to check on the vehicle in the ditch on State Line. When the Camden unit arrived on State Line, the vehicle had apparently driven out on its on power or received assistance from a passerby. The Camden Unit then traveled to the initial accident scene to lend aid. An unidentified female Union County resident and a child were the passengers in the vehicle at Ohio 725, Ind. 44 and State Line. The woman and child were returning home from a trip to the grocery store when the woman lost control of the vehicle. The woman was traveling north when the vehicle left the road and rolled in a field on the east side of the road. The vehicle came to rest on its side. Emergency responders were able to rescue the child through a window. The woman was pinned under the steering wheel and her rescue took longer. The woman declined treatment. Since the vehicle was in Preble County, Ohio the Ohio State Police investigated the accident. As of press time a phone call to the Ohio State Police had not been returned. No other information was available. On Monday, Union County Sheriff’s Deputy Dale Dishmond said he responded to an overturned vehicle accident earlier that day. According to Dishmond, Juan Hernandez, of Union County, lost control of his 2003 Mitsubishi on Brownsville Ave. at approximately 10:30 a.m. Hernandez was transported to a local hospital with a possible head injury. Dishmond said the accident could most likely be attributed to traveling too fast for the road conditions.
